Hi, my name is James Richardson, sometimes I go by JC, I am a Bermudian born pianist living in London since 2014. After suggesting that I must be crazy for leaving the sunny shores of Bermuda for the grey dampness that passes for British weather, the next thing people ask is " What kind of music do you play?" My response is most unsatisfying, "Everything."
I suppose that's not strictly true, I have a limited classical repertoire and my zydeco could use a little work. But other than that, I'm musically promiscuous. I don't have a favourite genre or style.
I played mainly gospel music up to the age of 16 and I've had the privilege of directing choirs in Bermuda as well as in the U.S. It was my last year of high school when I was introduced to the idea of making a living through music. What a fantastic idea. I began playing the hotel circuit with my high school music teachers' band, "Shine Hayward & Friends." After I graduated at 17 I toured with the international musical youth organization "Up With People" throughout the U.S. and Europe for 12 Months.
I later went on to study Professional Music at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
For over 25 years I have provided entertainment for Bermuda's tourism and leisure industry. This has included residencies in Bermuda's premier hotels, members’ clubs and restaurants, corporate and private events; a highlight being a reception at The Tucker's Point Resort for Queen Elizabeth II's state visit to Bermuda in 2009.
As a solo pianist, I am known for my expressive style of play. In addition to musicality and range of genre, my strengths lie in my ability to read and connect with my audience and to create memorable experiences.
In addition to performing, I have written and produced live concert events for clients including the United Nations and the Bermuda Government Ministry of Tourism. I have served as musical director for show bands, tribute bands and self-produced concerts, including "SoulFire" and my solo piano album release concert "Beautiful Things", held at The Earl Cameron Theatre, City Hall, Hamilton, Bermuda.
